Premium AEROTEC manufactures the centre fuselage for all four air forces involved in the Eurofighter programme (United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and Germany) as well as for the additional export customers Austria and Saudi Arabia. This makes Premium AEROTEC the largest structural supplier to the Eurofighter partner companies of Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH.
The centre fuselage, around six metres in length, is the most technically demanding segment of the Eurofighter. It is essentially an integral aluminium structure with titanium reinforcements that is planked with a single, monolithic outer shell made of carbon composite material. The result is a low-weight structure with the high stability needed to withstand all stresses that act on the centre fuselage. Because this fuselage segment not only accommodates the integral tanks, the air intakes for the engines and compartments for electronic and hydraulic systems – it is also the backbone of the aircraft. The cockpit, the rear fuselage section with the two engines, the wings and the main landing gear are all joined directly to the centre fuselage. Consequently, the centre fuselage must withstand all static and dynamic forces acting on the aircraft.
Integration of the Eurofighter centre fuselage is performed in Plant Section III in Augsburg. In this unit, 330 skilled employees perform Eurofighter section assembly and cable harness assembly. The Eurofighter centre fuselage consists of three sections; the main materials used here are titanium, aluminium, and carbon fibre composites (CFRPs). The complete integration of the centre fuselages with the cable harnesses assembled in Augsburg is performed at the EADS plant at Manching; from there, they are delivered to the final assembly lines in Germany (also in Manching), the UK (Warton), Italy (Turin) and Spain (Getafe, near Madrid).
